Stroke is the 4th most common cause of death in Hong Kong, and there is an increasing trend of young stroke cases recently with an average of 1.9 million brain cells die per minute among acute ischemic stroke patients. Thus, emergency treatment of stroke is very important in order to preserve more brain cells and minimize the damage to patients — every second matters!
RTHK Program – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYZvaLtgCqY introduces how the acute stroke alert system in public hospitals benefit healthcare workers and improve the efficiency of stroke emergency treatment. Additionally, the support provided by the “Integrated Model of Stroke Out-Patient Service through Nurse Clinic” to stroke patients is also explained.
Clinical Assistant Professor of Department of Medicine, School of Clinical Medicine and the Deputy Director of HKU Stroke, Professor Teo Kay Cheong, also shed light on the types, causes, treatments and prevention methods of stroke in the program. Furthermore, he reminded the public that in addition to maintaining a healthy dietary habit and exercising regularly, it is also important to get the “three highs” (high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and high cholesterol) under control as early as possible to minimize stroke risk.
