ree

Hypertension is the most significant risk factor of stroke. Recently, there is an increasing trend of young stroke cases while research found that most of the young stroke patients had not realised that they had hypertension and hence missed the opportunity to minimize their stroke risk.

The article is about a case of a grandmother and her grandchild with hypertension who both got a stroke, shared by the Director of HKU Stroke, Professor Gary Lau Kui Kai, and hereby reminds the public, regardless of age, to screen and manage their blood pressure as early as possible. In addition, blood pressure control is also integral to stroke patients to prevent themselves from getting a second stroke. In fact, stroke patients are usually required to take more than 3 types of drugs to control their blood pressure upon cerebral hemorrhage. A ”post-cerebral hemorrhage drug score” (TRICH,) which is newly developed by HKU Stroke, is now used to aid doctors to identify 3 anti-hypertensive drugs most suitable for early treatment of stroke patients in order to minimize the risk of having a second stroke and cerebral hemorrhage again.

Prevention is better than treatment. For yourself and to take care of your loved ones, cultivate a healthy lifestyle and dietary habit from now on to minimize the risk of stroke.
