Controlling Blood Pressure = Controlling Stroke Risk | World Hypertension Day, May 17th

Hypertension is the most important risk factor of stroke and affects ~30% of adults in Hong Kong. Alarmingly, about 45% of adults are unaware they have hypertension, and only 20% have it under control. This lack of awareness and management means many people miss the opportunity to prevent strokes. Globally, 1 in 4 adults may experience a stroke in their lifetime, which is a leading cause of disability. Moreover, our research finds that there is an increasing incidence of young stroke. Fortunately, most stroke risk factors are modifiable.

Early blood pressure management is crucial, maintaining controlled blood pressure post-stroke is also essential for recovery. Stroke survivors, especially those after Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), often need more than three medications to manage blood pressure and prevent recurrence stroke. HKU Stroke has developed “TRICH” score to help physicians identify ICH patients who would benefit from early triple anti-hypertensive therapy.

Additionally, we are conducting another study, using the telemedicine app “WeRISE” to monitor ICH patients’ home blood pressure and medication adherence. The interim results show an impressive 89.5% hypertension control rate at 3 months after stroke.

On World Hypertension Day, we encourage everyone to screen and manage their blood pressure as soon as possible to reduce stroke risk.
