The HKU Med study found that stroke patients with cancer have double the risk of recurrent stroke and cardiovascular mortality, compared with those without cancer but who are hypertensive or smoke. We found that blood vessels are damaged during cancer radiotherapy. In addition, cancer patients have a higher blood coagulation level and are prone to ischemic stroke, a timely reminder that although the survival of cancer patients has increased with medical advances in treatment, risk factors for stroke such as hypertension should not be ignored.
